Music Isn’t Just Music

Now Bring me someone who can play the harp. While the harp was being played, the power of the Lord came upon Elisha, and he said, “This is what the Lord says: This dry valley will be filled with pools of water! – 2 Kings 15-16

The power of music is more than us humans will ever know. If one instrument being played in the presence of Elisha had the ability to center his mind, body, and spirit in a way that he could hear from God and receive whispers about what would take place in the future, then one has to ask oneself: How powerful is music?

I can’t emphasize enough the importance of guarding your mind against garbage music – music that does not glorify God; music with lyrics that promote things you would never want done to your son or daughter, that is, if you truly loved them.

Music is not just about a nice beat or melody. Music is released into the atmosphere to do one thing: bring you closer to God, to where you can hear His voice so clearly, or bring you closer to the devil, to where you can hear his voice so clearly.

Do you struggle with depression? Thoughts in your head about how you’re not good enough? Maybe thoughts about your weight, how smart you are, the type of clothes you wear, the type of house you live in, etc. Do you struggle with anger? Do you struggle with hurting people either with your words or physically? The music you listen to may not be the source of every struggle, but it can absolutely reinforce the thoughts you’re already fighting.

Music that doesn’t glorify God will position you to hear the devil’s voice so clearly. That is the voice that is telling you all those things that I just previously mentioned. The devil wants to tear you down and keep you down. He is not in the business of building anyone up.

Worship music, or music made to glorify God, will open up your mind to the voice of God. God’s voice will speak life over you! That voice will tell you, “You are my son,” or, “You are my daughter, and I am well pleased.” God’s voice will speak proper identity over you. The voice of the devil will cause you to be confused about your identity.

We are facing an identity crisis as we speak, and I believe that identity crisis is secretly fueled by the music we have allowed to infiltrate our minds.

The world is constantly trying to tell you who you are. Music is one of the voices participating in that conversation.

That’s why what you listen to matters.

Worship reminds you who God is. When you remember who God is, you begin to remember who you are.

I encourage you to change the music you listen to. Fill your home, your car, and your mind with music that points you toward God.

Change what you’re listening to, and pay attention to what begins changing in you.
